Shortly after his arrival in London in 1711, Georg Friedrich Handel quickly established a top position in English musical life, which is not surprising given the steady stream of masterpieces that flowed from his pen: operas, oratorios, concertos, sonatas, etc.; moreover, he was an unrivaled musician. Every month we organize concerts on the Smits organ in De Duif. Stephan van de Wijgert is our resident organist and curates the program for the upcoming summer concerts. Along the Prinsengracht lies a hidden gem: De Duif. This cultural venue is one of the event locations of Stadsherstel Amsterdam. The Smits organ in De Duif is a monument within a monument. The Barock Sommer Orchestra returns with an exciting program! This time inspired by London, which was a vibrant musical center in the 18th century. All composers whose works you will hear today lived and worked there for a time. The economic prosperity of the time also propelled music to unprecedented heights. As a result, London became a magnet: composers were well-paid and wrote the most beautiful works. You can enjoy two lively overtures and two playful symphonies.
