‘Darkness and Light’ In the IMOCG opening concert ‘Darkness and Light’, we hear titular organist Erwin Wiersinga on the main organ of the Martinikerk. He is joined by an ensemble of professional singers in a program that explores the depths of the European choral and organ tradition. Admission: The tourist entry fee for the Martinikerk applies (€3). The fourth edition of the International Martini Organ Competition Groningen takes place from August 2 to August 8. The competition is held in three rounds. In the first round, all twelve participants perform on the De Mare/Hinsz organ in Appingedam (day 1) and on the Schnitger organ in the Martinikerk Groningen (day 2). Enjoy a charming lunch concert this summer at the monumental organ of the Martinikerk. Students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium present a special concert of about 45 minutes on Friday afternoons on one of the most impressive organs in Northern Netherlands. The fifth concert will be given by Jaime González-Sierra. The Spanish organist began his musical training as a chorister at the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and then studied organ, basso continuo, and chamber music at the Arturo Soria Conservatoire. He continued his studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Esmuc), where he specialized in organ and improvisation. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in Performing Musician at the Prins Claus Conservatorium under Erwin Wiersinga, Sietze de Vries, and Johan Hoffman. Jaime González-Sierra won second prize at the fifth edition of the Francisco Salinas National Organ Competition and has performed as a soloist at festivals and concert venues in Spain and the Netherlands. He has collaborated with ensembles such as La Caravaggia, Cor Francesc Valls, Camerata Antonio Soler, and the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra. He was the organist in the crypt of the Sagrada Família and is currently active as assistant organist in both the basilica and the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel. He is also connected to the Josef Cathedral in Groningen. In addition to his musical career, he studied History at the Complutense University of Madrid. Before and after the concert, there is ample opportunity to wander through the Martinikerk and experience the unique atmosphere and rich history of this monumental building. Admission: €3. Enjoy a delightful lunchtime concert this summer at the monumental organ of the Martinikerk. Students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium will present a special concert of approximately 45 minutes on Friday afternoons at one of the most impressive organs in Northern Netherlands. The sixth concert will be performed by Jan-Willem Jonkman. Jan-Willem Jonkman (1998) received his first organ lessons at the age of 14 from Wim Verweij at the music school in Elburg. From 2017 to 2019, he studied organ at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen with Erwin Wiersinga and Theo Jellema. After a break, he resumed his studies in 2024 and is currently studying with Sietze de Vries and Erwin Wiersinga. Additionally, he is taking basso continuo and harpsichord lessons with Johan Hofmann and piano with Nata Tsvereli. He has participated in masterclasses with among others Wolfgang Zerer and Éric Lebrun. Besides his studies, Jan-Willem is active as an organist in the Elburg and Epe region, affiliated with the Grote Kerk in Elburg (Quellhorst organ, 1825) and the Goede Herderkerk in Epe. He is also involved with Dutch Organ Tours and works in the business sector. Before the concert, the student will personally introduce the program, allowing you to discover more about the background and character of the selected works. There will be plenty of opportunities to wander through the Martinikerk before and after the concert and experience the unique atmosphere and rich history of this monumental building. Students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium will present a special concert of approximately 45 minutes on Friday afternoons, featuring one of the most impressive organs in Northern Netherlands. The concert will be provided by Márton Lénárt. Márton began his musical training at the age of six in Budapest, where he initially took piano lessons. Early on, his interest in the organ and the rich tradition of church music grew. He studied for four years at the Bartók Béla Conservatory with Balázs Szabó, where he mastered not only the classical organ repertoire but also delved into the historical, liturgical, and stylistic backgrounds of the music. Since September 2023, Márton has been studying at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, where he is taught by Erwin Wiersinga and Sietze de Vries. Within his studies, he focuses on the vast European organ repertoire, improvisation, and historical performance practice. Before the concert, Márton will give a brief personal explanation of the program and the selected works. This way, you will learn more about the background, style, and character of the music. Students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium will provide a special concert of approximately 45 minutes every Friday afternoon on one of the most impressive organs in Northern Netherlands. The final concert will be given by Annemiek Zeldenrust. Annemiek began her organ lessons at the music school Quintus in Kampen. After obtaining her certificates with honors, she continued her studies in 2022 at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen. Here she studies organ with Erwin Wiersinga and Sietze de Vries and also takes harpsichord lessons with Johan Hofmann. Annemiek has participated in masterclasses with, among others, Eduardo Belotti, Pavel Cerný, Joel Speerstra, and Wolfgang Zerer. In addition to her studies, she is active as a church organist and teaches organ lessons. Before the concert, Annemiek will provide a brief personal introduction to the program and the chosen works. This way, you will discover more about the background, style, and character of the music. There will be plenty of opportunity to stroll peacefully through the Martinikerk before and after the concert and experience the unique atmosphere and rich history of this monumental building. On this day, a special organ excursion will take place along four beautiful medieval churches in the terpen area: Oosterwijtwerd, ’t Zandt, Huizinge, and Middelstum. During this musical exploration, participants will have the chance to experience several remarkable historical organs up close. In each church, the instrument will be briefly explained and played, so that visitors can not only experience the sound but also learn more about the history, construction, and character of these often ancient instruments. The excursion travels through one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes of Northern Netherlands. The churches, located on ancient terpen, collectively form an impressive heritage of architecture, music, and regional history. From the intimate nature of small village churches to the monumental organ in Middelstum: each location has its own story and sound world. The organ excursion will be led by organist/organ expert Henk de Vries and historian Reint Wobbes and is intended for organ enthusiasts, musicians, choir singers, and those interested in culture and history. It is also a unique opportunity for those who want to learn more about the Groningen terpen landscape. The excursion starts at 10:30 AM in Groningen opposite the Central Station, Stop Rondvaartboot. There will be a coach from Arriva Touring ready to transport participants to Oosterwijtwerd, ’t Zandt, Huizinge, and Middelstum. An additional pick-up point will be at 11:00 AM at the station in Loppersum. The return journey will begin at 3:30 PM in Loppersum and will end in Groningen at the Central Station at 4:30 PM.
